Subject: Important Information: 2026–2027 Student of the Year Program, Selection Process, and Grievance Procedures

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students,

We are excited to announce the launch of the 2026–2027 Student of the Year program for Caddo Parish Public Schools! This program recognizes outstanding students in 5th, 8th, and 12th grades who demonstrate excellence in academic achievement, leadership, service, citizenship, and personal character.

Below is an overview of the program eligibility requirements, our school’s selection process, and information regarding dispute resolution procedures.

1. Minimum Eligibility Criteria To be considered for Student of the Year, candidates must meet the following initial requirements:

Grade Level: Must be a 5th, 8th, or 12th-grade student. Academic Record:

Must have a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale based on past academic performance: 5th Grade Candidates: GPA calculated from 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades. 8th Grade Candidates: GPA calculated from 5th, 6th, and 7th grades. 12th Grade Candidates: Unweighted GPA calculated from 9th, 10th, and 11th grades.

2. School-Level Selection Process Academic Assessment Review:

For all students meeting the 3.5 GPA threshold, standard academic assessment scores (such as LEAP, AP, ACT, PSAT/SAT, or other relevant standardized testing) will be reviewed. The top 25% of qualified students will move forward to the finalist evaluation phase.

Teacher Rubric Evaluation:
Teachers with direct knowledge of the candidates will evaluate them using a standardized Teacher Rubric. The lowest teacher evaluation score for each student is dropped, and the remaining scores are averaged. Top 5 Finalists: Based on cumulative GPA, standardized assessment performance, and teacher rubrics, the top five students will be selected as school finalists.

Writing Sample & Interview:

Monitored Writing Sample: Finalists will complete an autobiographical writing prompt in a monitored, two-hour setting at school.

Interview: Finalists will participate in a structured interview before a diverse committee of five or more members, responding to standard age-appropriate questions provided by the Louisiana Department of Education.

Final Selection: The school's Student of the Year will be selected based on the highest combined rubric scores from the monitored writing sample and the committee interview.

3. Next Steps for Selected Honorees:
The selected school honoree will represent our school at the district level and complete an electronic application portfolio (due October 23, 2026) containing academic records, achievements, activity logs, photos, and media consent forms.

4. Grievance Procedures:
We are committed to a fair, transparent, and objective selection process aligned with state guidelines. A copy of the Student of the Year Grievance Procedures is attached to this letter for your review, outlining the formal steps and procedures for resolving any issues or disputes related to candidate selection.
